1. Respect for the lower learning

For example, in “The Book of Words”, “He Cheng said: ‘Respect is not outside, but one’s heart is respect.’ Zhu Zi said: ‘You have to move your appearance, think about it, and be respectful.’ Then he said: ‘Each person has to say one side.’”[8] If a student asks, “Why do you use respect for it?” Zhu Zi replied: “It’s just that there is no delusion inside, and no delusion outside.”[9]

First, the disadvantages of fighting the inner thoughts. First, the internal understanding of fighting. Zhu Zi said: “What we call respect now is not to put the word ‘respect’ into a good thing. Just keep this meaning in your heart, but it is not a name.” [17] also said: “Respect is not to do something. The ancients often put the word ‘respect in this place, how can you do it? Respect is just to raise this mind and don’t teach it to let go, so the mind will be clear.” [18] Students regard respect as inner restraint, so Zhu Zi repeatedly reminded that respect is not an inner matter, not a force that is forced into the heart, but an inner retention of his own mind. The second is to fight and capture. If a student asks, “If you catch me, you will feel so decayed when you let me go, and I don’t know what it is?” Zhu Zi said, “This is not necessary to catch me so much. If you want to catch me, you will add another one to catch me to the bottom of your heart, which is a lot of things. If you know that letting me go is not good, then you will pick it up, which is respect.” [19] Zhu Zi emphasized that maintaining respect is a long-term process, an invention of the original facial hole of the heart, so don’t catch me, and there is no other heart to catch this heart.
